Moving the Goalposts

Also known as: raising the bar

Raising the standard of evidence after it's been met, so no amount of proof can ever settle the question.

Examples

A disagreement about a health claim plays out over several messages.

Ben: “Show me one study that supports this.” Ana: “Here’s a peer-reviewed study from last year that does.” Ben: “Well, that’s just one study. It doesn’t count until there’s a meta-analysis.”

If a meta-analysis appeared next, it’s a safe bet the standard would move again — to “but who funded it,” or “wait for replication.”

At home, the same pattern shows up around chores.

Teen: “I cleaned my whole room like you asked.” Parent: “It’s clean, but you still haven’t organized the closet — that was always part of it.”

The closet was never mentioned before the room was cleaned. The finish line moved the moment it was about to be reached.

Why the reasoning fails

Moving the goalposts works by silently redefining what counts as “enough” right when the current standard is satisfied. The person isn’t wrong that more evidence, or a tidier closet, would be nice — the problem is that the requirement wasn’t fixed in advance and is only revealed as insufficient afterward. This makes the underlying position unfalsifiable in practice: no amount of evidence can ever close the argument, because the bar keeps rising exactly as high as needed to stay out of reach.

It’s easiest to spot when the shift happens right after the original demand is met — that timing is the giveaway, since a genuinely higher standard would usually have been stated from the start.

How to respond

  • Ask for the standard up front: “What exactly would count as enough evidence, so I know what I’m aiming for?”
  • Name the pattern gently: “That’s a different bar than what you asked for originally — can we agree on one and stick to it?”
  • Get it in writing when it matters — for recurring disagreements, write down what “done” means before starting.
  • Consider whether the new ask is reasonable. Sometimes a requirement really was underspecified, and adding detail isn’t bad faith — the difference is whether the shift is on the details or on the entire goal.
