False Consensus Effect
Overestimating how many people share your opinions, habits, and values — treating your own view as the obvious mainstream one.
Examples
Petra: “Nobody uses cash anymore.” Louis: “About half this country does.” Petra: “Well — nobody I know.”
Exactly. Petra’s sample is her circle, and her circle looks like her.
The online version decides elections in people’s heads:
Post (November): “I don’t know a single person voting for them. If they win, it’s rigged.”
The feed wasn’t lying, precisely — it was showing that person a hall of mirrors. Friends, followed accounts, and recommendation algorithms all lean toward agreement, so “everyone I see” quietly becomes “everyone”.
In the original experiments, students asked to walk around campus wearing a sandwich board guessed that most other students would make the same choice they did — whichever choice they made. Refusers thought most would refuse; wearers thought most would wear it.
Why it happens
Start with an honest method: when you don’t know what others think, your own reaction is genuine evidence — you’re a person, after all. Some projection is rational. The bias is that we push far past what that one data point warrants, for reinforcing reasons: the people around us really do resemble us (we chose them, and the feed chose the rest); our own reasons feel so compelling that disagreement reads as ignorance or bad faith; and a self that holds “normal” views is comfortable to inhabit.
The dangerous downstream effect is on charity: if your view is obviously the consensus, dissenters must be trolls or fools. It also supplies fake ammunition for the bandwagon fallacy — “everyone agrees with me” often means “I haven’t checked”.
How to counter it
- Find a real number before claiming a majority. Surveys, sales figures, vote tallies — anything beats extrapolating from your contacts.
- Audit your sample: who couldn’t appear in your feed or friend group? Their absence isn’t their rarity.
- Treat surprise as data. Genuine shock that “anyone believes X” measures the narrowness of your circle at least as well as the strangeness of X.
- Drop “everybody knows” from arguments — if it’s true, you can cite something; if you can’t, it wasn’t true.
